SXSWORLD Preview issue makes me want to cut myself

Damn! I mean… I know this is a mix of scheduling info and ‘meh’ content, but at least make me want to read something. The SXSW official magazine’s ‘preview issue’ (February 2008) arrived in the mail a few days ago, and colored me unimpressed to say the least. This is a magazine sent to ticket-buyers of SXSW, and provides info on what’s happening, who’s going to be there etc, in the ‘interactive’, ‘film’ and ‘music’ categories, and is broken up accordingly. Unfortunately, even though there’s some kind-of interesting content, the layout is so lackluster and not compelling in the slightest, that it’s a struggle to even start reading. This looks like it was handed off to the junior designer at an advertising agency who was probably told to follow last years template and “make sure there’s not much to cut”. This would look more at home jammed in the seatback on a budget airline’s crappy one aisle plane-ride from Dallas to Kansas City, not arriving in the mail of people who have spent hundreds, possibly thousands of dollars to attend your event.
