New MLK day graphic for United Way Capital Area

January 15, 2009

I put together a small graphic for United Way Capital Area, showing the locations of some of the benches in their MLK Peace Bench Project. I wish I could have spent more time on it, there’s so much I’d like to add to make it more functional, but deadlines are deadlines! I’m glad at least it gives some idea of the scale of the project. Maybe I’ll revisit it soon to add more locations as they appear. Click here for more info on the project and United Way from their blog. Oh and here’s where they’re using it.

XXL magazine needs to have babies so that one day all magazines are this good

January 11, 2009

XXL cover detail

I cannot put into how words how much I love this magazine. From my perspective, it is almost perfect. The way it looks, the cover design and photography, the way it feels, the way the content flows when you turn the pages, the length of stories, the sizes and orders of the different sections, the interior photography, the graphics, even the ad placement all verge on perfection (but only in my humble opinion of course).

Maxim January 2009, ‘Young Hot Hollywood Special Issue’

January 11, 2009

MAXIM January 2009 cover

I picked Maxim up this evening in Walmart – what better way to spend a Saturday evening? This magazine takes me straight back to men’s mag mid-90’s in the UK. It feels slightly weird buying a magazine with Hilary Duff on the cover – isn’t she only twelve years old or something? Now, kudos to Maxim, they’re not pretending to be anything other than a magazine full of hot chicks for men. There’s no crap about how to dress, how to be sensitive to anyone’s needs, how to knit, nothing. In fact the only cover-line not directly referring to women says “THE BEST 99 BEERS ON EARTH”. Straight to the point.

New Presidential Limo infographic

January 9, 2009

Bearing more than a passing resemblance to my sweet Toyota Yaris, the new limo for President-Elect Obama is a pretty incredible vehicle, as shown in this infographic by John Lawson (via Gizmodo).

Vanity Fair no. 582 is awesome and not awesome

January 8, 2009

Vanity Fair February 2009 cover

I bought the new issue of Vanity Fair with Cate Blanchett on the cover. Love the cover photography and type treatment, it all looks incredible as usual. She was shot as by usual Annie Leibovitz.

VF cover detail

I love the typographic details in Vanity Fair, it’s really nailed their signature style. The repro on the cover is really good, but after looking at the photo for a minute I can’t help feeling it looks slightly fuzzy – but not to any degree that really matters, and if it is, it’s more likely caused by print processes than a camera problem I think.

Vibe ‘Best of…’ lists

January 7, 2009

Vibe’s Tabloid Issue has a pretty neat looking list called ‘The 80 Best Songs of ’08’. It’s self-explanatory, and easy to read, and makes good use of a time-line-esque layout (it’s NOT a timeline, rather it’s in order of song preference). I also like the additional smaller lists like ‘7 Best Videos of the Year’ and ‘5 Dopest Fabolous Guest Verses’ – their spelling, not mine.

Phew. Now back to work.

January 7, 2009

I’m a little messed up in my schedule right now, and keep waking up at 130am (assuming I was able to get to bed by then) ready to go. So here I am. The next issue of GivingCity magazine is now available to download here.

I’m pleased with it but also glad it’s over for another issue, and I can focus on some other tasks. The next step with GivingCity is to start selling advertising in it and making it pay for itself. I’m pretty sure we’ve picked the worst time possible to try to start a magazine, and of course doing it entirely in our spare time isn’t ideal, but we’ve got to start somewhere right?

Anyway, we’re always looking for feedback on the magazine, so we can put out the best product we can. Of course I feel like there are some shockingly bad pages in there that I now wish I’d done differently, but there’s also a lot of stuff I’m happy with, so I guess I’ll live. I do feel like it’s a big improvement on the first issue, and I hope the third is even more of a step forward than this was over the first. Please take a look and tell us what you think.

Animated infographic on Japanese food supply and demand

This is an incredible infographic on another subject I’ve never heard of before. Sick with jealousy, wish I could make stuff like this, need to get on it (love how even the cows are dancing).

New York year-end double issue has some awesome photography

January 3, 2009

I just found this issue while going through the junk-pile in the kitchen (similar in concept to the junk drawer, except we ran out of drawers). The cover is so cool. I love it. It’s listed as an illustration (credited to Rodrigo Corral Design with Ben Wiseman and Tracy Morford), not a photo, so I wonder how exactly it was created? (more…)
