Guitar Aficionado Magazine

April 11, 2010

So I only picked this up because I was counting the magazines in Borders with Jeff Bridges on the cover (there were a lot). It’s completely different from what I was expecting. I thought I was going to see dry, copy heavy, middle of the road layouts with some crappy manufacturer-supplied photography, and a feature well phone interview with Jeff Bridges filled out to 20 pages with whatever publicity stills and photos they could rustle up from the interwebs. XXL magazine needs to have babies so that one day all magazines are this good

XXL cover detail

I cannot put into how words how much I love this magazine. From my perspective, it is almost perfect. The way it looks, the cover design and photography, the way it feels, the way the content flows when you turn the pages, the length of stories, the sizes and orders of the different sections, the interior photography, the graphics, even the ad placement all verge on perfection (but only in my humble opinion of course).

Maxim January 2009, ‘Young Hot Hollywood Special Issue’

MAXIM January 2009 cover

I picked Maxim up this evening in Walmart – what better way to spend a Saturday evening? This magazine takes me straight back to men’s mag mid-90’s in the UK. It feels slightly weird buying a magazine with Hilary Duff on the cover – isn’t she only twelve years old or something? Now, kudos to Maxim, they’re not pretending to be anything other than a magazine full of hot chicks for men. There’s no crap about how to dress, how to be sensitive to anyone’s needs, how to knit, nothing. In fact the only cover-line not directly referring to women says “THE BEST 99 BEERS ON EARTH”. Straight to the point.
