WIRED UK’s cover paper stock is amazing

WIRED UK's cover paper stock is amazing

I have no idea what kind of paper they’ve used on this gatefold, or if they always use it and I just haven’t noticed, but it feels amazing. It looks really good too, in fact it has this weird, human skin-like texture that makes the people on the cover look oddly more real (the color itself is also amazing which helps). Best seen in person.

Awesome photography in The Absolute Sound issue 223

May 29, 2012

Joel Salcido shot this feature for The Absolute Sound, who are one of the clients we provide magazine design and production services to at October Custom Publishing. Love the stepped levitation. Would love my household objects to levitate in real life, but oh well.

LOCALE magazine’s latest issue

May 29, 2012

Lots of beautiful photography in the latest issue of LOCALE. This is it’s 30th issue of this digital magazine, so expect to see a redesign of the magazine in the next year. While it looks good now, I think it would benefit from a redesign that focuses on readability for screen. It’s already got the photography and layout down, but on certain monitors can be a struggle to read in places… and increasing the font size would undoubtedly also increase the page count, a value add for our client for just a little added production time long-term. Guitar Aficionado Magazine

April 11, 2010

So I only picked this up because I was counting the magazines in Borders with Jeff Bridges on the cover (there were a lot). It’s completely different from what I was expecting. I thought I was going to see dry, copy heavy, middle of the road layouts with some crappy manufacturer-supplied photography, and a feature well phone interview with Jeff Bridges filled out to 20 pages with whatever publicity stills and photos they could rustle up from the interwebs. On there you’ll be able to view almost every page of every magazine we’ve either published or been hired to create thus far. I’d really appreciate you becoming a fan, and I’m happy to return the favor! Take a look at the page here. Introduce yourself!

Visual Aid books arrived from Amazon!

I ordered two Visual Aid books from Black Dog publishing. They’re chock full of fantastic infographics on a random and very wide variety of subjects, and perfect for stealing ideas from…I mean looking at for inspiration. They’ve also recently started selling posters of their infographics, so now I have to figure out how much I have left on my credit card, what I’ll tell my wife, and where I will hang them when my house is in foreclosure. Take a look at their site here.

Texas State employee charitable contributions graphic

October 28, 2009

GC4 STATE FULL GRAPHIC

In the latest issue of GivingCity we ran a story about the thousands of state employees who donate millions each year to Central Texas charities. We made this sample of different organization’s contributions from a random selection of agencies. I thought the contrast between the different agencies was shocking – even after you take into account the number of employees per agency. In the magazine I had to make this graphic fit to the spread, but I made this version so that I could show all the information unhindered by the page-size. After realizing I had all this empty space on the right, I also decide to place the actual pages from the story on the graphic – they remain readable. You can see the original after the jump, or download the whole issue here. (more…)

GivingCity Austin magazine issue 4 available for download

GC4 FINAL X-1

It’s that time of the year again where in-between neglecting duties to my family and multiple full-time job deadlines, we somehow managed to crank out another issue of GivingCity Austin. Please hit this link to download, and PLEASE send it to as many people as possible. We’re probably not going to do another unless we can find someone willing to bankroll it for us, so the more people that see it, the better chance there is that someone may want to.More pages after the jump….although I’d really rather you went here and just download the thing. Some recent TAS work…

TAS 195 20-21pdf

TAS 195 22-23pdf

So we did a huge Editors’ Choice section in TAS 196… there are 80ish pages of categorized product listings broken up by one image per page and navigable (is that a word?) to some degree using the tabs at the side, and the graphic clues on the pages that you’re entering a new section. I know this isn’t the most terribly interesting looking layout, but I wanted to show it here as I think we did a pretty damn good job of turning what could have been a vary daunting read into something fairly inviting and easy to use – especially given its size. I’ve shown all the samples in spreads here, so the ad pages that ran in the print version are here too. Cover and some more samples – including the other main feature layout – after the (more…)
