Awesome photography in The Absolute Sound issue 223

May 29, 2012

Joel Salcido shot this feature for The Absolute Sound, who are one of the clients we provide magazine design and production services to at October Custom Publishing. Love the stepped levitation. Would love my household objects to levitate in real life, but oh well.

LOCALE magazine’s latest issue

May 29, 2012

Lots of beautiful photography in the latest issue of LOCALE. This is it’s 30th issue of this digital magazine, so expect to see a redesign of the magazine in the next year. While it looks good now, I think it would benefit from a redesign that focuses on readability for screen. It’s already got the photography and layout down, but on certain monitors can be a struggle to read in places… and increasing the font size would undoubtedly also increase the page count, a value add for our client for just a little added production time long-term. LOCALE magazine project update

June 2, 2010

We recently put together another issue of LOCALE magazine, which we create in it’s entirety here at October Custom Publishing – magazine design, editorial, production… you name it. Now I have to not fall asleep … lots of reading to catch up on, and Natalie Word, GQ, WIRED’s 500+ mb iPad issue, Popular Science, Adobe and other related posts to write. (more…)

And here are the corporeal fruits of our recent labors at the full-time job. This doesn’t count the two digital Buyer’s Guide magazines, the print HIFI+ magazine which we haven’t received copies of yet, or the myriad other collateral pieces we work on. But anyway, it’s nice to see them in person instead of onscreen.

LOCALE magazine project update

April 28, 2010

Read in the LA Times a while back about an architect who designed his house in order to be able to park his 1984 Ferrari 512 BBi Boxer in his living-room…which led to the idea for a story on out of this world, custom garages. We were lucky enough to be able to get the architect of the Ferrari garage – Holger Schubert of Archisis – to shoot some more images of his house for us. A few more pages from the newest issue after the jump. (more…)

Guitar Aficionado Magazine

April 11, 2010

So I only picked this up because I was counting the magazines in Borders with Jeff Bridges on the cover (there were a lot). It’s completely different from what I was expecting. I thought I was going to see dry, copy heavy, middle of the road layouts with some crappy manufacturer-supplied photography, and a feature well phone interview with Jeff Bridges filled out to 20 pages with whatever publicity stills and photos they could rustle up from the interwebs. LOCALE magazine project

March 10, 2010

I’ve been working on this project for a couple of months now – it’s been an interesting experience creating this mini (digital) magazine. I’ll go into more detail later (because I’m lazy and it’s almost 3am), but here are a few pages from the latest issue which went out a couple of weeks ago. I’m excited about where this magazine could go design-wise, and the potential for experimenting once the production process has smoothed out. (more…)

GivingCity Austin magazine issue 4 available for download

GC4 FINAL X-1

It’s that time of the year again where in-between neglecting duties to my family and multiple full-time job deadlines, we somehow managed to crank out another issue of GivingCity Austin. Please hit this link to download, and PLEASE send it to as many people as possible. We’re probably not going to do another unless we can find someone willing to bankroll it for us, so the more people that see it, the better chance there is that someone may want to.More pages after the jump….although I’d really rather you went here and just download the thing.
